چکیده

In this chapter I give an overview of shock acceleration , including a discussion of the maximum energies possible and the shape of the spectrum near cut-oo, interactions of high energy cosmic rays with, and propagation through, the background radiation, and the resulting electron-photon cascade. Possible sources of the highest energy cosmic rays are discussed including active galaxies , gamma ray bursts and topological defects. I argue that while the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays is still uncertain, it is not necessary to invoke exotic models such as emission by topological defects to explain the existing data. It seems likely that shock acceleration at Fanaroo-Riley Class II radio galaxies can account for the existing data. However, new cosmic ray data, as well as better estimates of the extragalactic radiation elds and magnetic elds will be necessary before we will be certain of the origin of the highest energy particles occurring in nature.

A Break in the Highest Energy Cosmic Ray Spectrum: a Signature of New Physics?

Recent experimental data from the Fly’s Eye and the Akeno array seem to indicate significant structure in the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum above 10 eV. A statistically significant dip has been established at about 5 × 10 eV. In addition, each experiment observed a different superhigh energy event above 10 eV separated from the rest of the data by about half a decade in energy. In this a...

Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays from dark matter annihilation

Explaining the origin of cosmic rays at energies above the Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin bound EGZK ≃ 4×10 eV is an interesting and puzzling scientific challenge for several reasons: AGASA observes a flux of order of one cosmic ray event per 100 km per year at energies above 10 eV [1], thus confirming the flux seen by previous smaller ground based arrays on the northern hemisphere, see e.g. [2]. On t...

Numerical simulation of hull and propeller interaction in acceleration maneuver

Prediction of a ship’s trajectory during a maneuvering motion is so important. In this study, the acceleration maneuver for a twin-screw vessel is directly investigated using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) environment and unsteady RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. For this purpose, the self-propulsion and acceleration simulations with hull and propeller interaction for the well-...

Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays: Old Physics or New Physics?

We consider the advantages of and the problems associated with hypotheses to explain the origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR: E > 10 EeV) and the “trans-GZK” cosmic rays (TGZK: E > 100 EeV) both through (‘old physics” (acceleration in cosmic sources) and “new physics” (new particles, topological defects, fat neutrino cross sections, Lorentz invariance violation).
